BOISE, Id – The Idaho House voted today for a bill to evict Occupy Boise from state land.  The legislation to outlaw the group’s campsite is on the fast track through the Idaho Legislature.  Several Representatives argued against it, including Boise Democrat Phylis King.  She said the bill was too harsh.

Phylis King “These are Idaho citizens.  I’ve gotten emails from all over the state, and those that testified were teachers, lawyers, ex-city councilmen, retirees, and veterans, I bet half of the people were veterans.  I was impressed by how thoughtful and courteous they were, they believed they were just expressing their rights to peaceful assembly.”

Eagle Republican Reed DeMordaunt compared Occupy Boise to a playground bully.  He says when he doesn’t agree with someone, he doesn’t camp on their lawn until he changes their mind.

Reed DeMordaunt “Will we continue to show each other the respect that we should?  Or will we allow efforts to quote “Occupy” to essentially allow a group, an organization, an individual, whoever, to essentially publically blackmail until they get their way?  I believe that is a dangerous precident.”

The legislation now heads to the Senate State Affairs Committee for consideration.

Rep. DeMordaunt thinks that Occupy Boise is a “bully?”  That’s laughable, considering the current situation.  What part of right to peaceably assemble, consult together and instruct one’s legislators is so hard to understand? [State Constitution, Art. I, Sections 2, 9 & 10]  Also, perhaps Mr. DeMordaunt needs to be reminded that 5th & Jefferson is not his front lawn – since the Capitol is not exclusively his house.  It’s the People’s House and We the People have rights.

Precedent. Not Precident. How can an elected official be such a moron? So, it is morally correct to introduce a bill and pass into law something that will outlaw an action that is uncomfortable to you? Or perhaps to make unlawful something that you do not personally agree with even though the action is peaceful and not meant to cause harm to others? What you really choose to do is limit the people’s right to assemble and speak their minds against what they feel is a flawed and corrupt system. I honestly hope the good citizens who placed you into your office come to their senses and change their minds about your ability to represent them and replace you in the next election cycle. Better to sweep away the criticisms and unsightly gathering so that you are not reminded of the moral bankruptcy that has consumed this country on your way into work which, need I remind you, is paid by the very people you wish to enforce your sadly misplaced authority upon.

“Blackmail” is what the Legislature has done to our lives, our jobs and our futures. So many of us have lost everything in this recession/depression and have looked to our elected officials (quite in vain) to create the climate that will create new jobs and bring jobs back to our unemployed. Instead we have seen in-fighting, partisan politicking, stone-walling, thinly disguised efforts to secure even more tax breaks for the wealthiest “job creators”(who neither need tax breaks nor are creating jobs) and finger pointing towards the other side. We are tired of the excuses. We elected you with the expectations that you could lead. We are disappointed. You have failed. You continue to fail. In any other job environment you would be terminated with no notice. Sadly, you all get to keep your jobs for the rest of your terms. Millions of us did not have that luxury and we all have bills to pay. Please pull your inflated heads forthwith from your backsides and do the job that we all expect of you and stop wasting time on such petty “pet” bills. This is a gross waste of time and public money.
