You might recognize them from our broadcast archives — or you might fall in love with them for the first time.

Join in a New Year journey with host Hal Cannon to an ancient Gaelic ritual of bringing in the new year with fiddler Alasdair Frazier. Then join Jean Redpath for the original Auld Lang Syne. From the Isles back to the States we travel to delve into the Native American way of marking time with a heartfelt story from Lakota elder, Leonard Littlefinger telling how ritual can help us transform a brutal history into a new story of hope. We end with the hope of a healthy land from the Grand Canyon.

This program was recorded during a live performance in December 2011 as part of the Morrison Center's Family Reading Series.

The performance was scripted and directed by Carole Whiteleather, she also performs as the Ghost of Christmas Past. The role of Ebenezer Scrooge is performed by Snitch Marker with Rod Wolfe as Bob Cratchit and Old Fezziwig. Playing the part of Fred and Young Scrooge is David Ketchum, and in the roles of Subscription Gent, Fan, and Belle is Veronica Von Tobel. The character of Jacob Marley is comprised of voices of the cast. Special Guest Voice for the Ghost of Christmas Present is that of Richard Klautsch. Piano and violin are played by Robyn Whitmore and sound design and effects are by Tim Long. Audio engineering is by John Fransen.

An NPR tradition every New Year's Eve since the 1970s, Toast of the Nation is the perfect complement for the occasion. It's festive jazz you can party to, all night long. Hear encore sets from Buika, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Joshua Redman and Brad Meldau, pianist Fred Hersch, Ron Carter and Dee Dee Bridgewater.
