This week, the Sierra Club released a list of cities around the country that have made a commitment to green energy. Among them are bigger metros like Atlanta and Portland – as well as smaller cities like Pueblo and Boulder, Colorado. Nearby Salt Lake City also made the cut.

On Sunday evening, hot water poured on to the intersection of Grove and 3rd streets in downtown Boise. Steam filled the air as a leak from the city's underground geothermal line brought attention to a system not many people know much about.

A new study from an environmental think tank ranks Idaho among the states with a low ecological footprint. The study from the Global Footprint Network ranked states against one other on a number of green measures. Idaho received the top ranking for electricity generated from renewable energy. Washington and Oregon come in second and third, respectively.

A close look shows the renewable source that earned Idaho its high ranking is hydropower, with wind and biomass taking up smaller shares.
