Soccer world has lost a legend: German footballer Franz Beckenbauer dies at 78

MICHEL MARTIN, HOST:

Good morning. I'm Michel Martin. The soccer world has lost a legend. German footballer Franz Beckenbauer died yesterday at the age of 78. Born in post-war Munich, Beckenbauer is credited with redefining the role of the defender. He was known as a leader on the pitch, as well as for his colorful personal life. He went on to become one of only three men to have won a World Cup both as a player and as a coach. Brazilian legend Pele said, he was one of the best I ever saw play. It's MORNING EDITION.
