Firefighters Make Progress On Karney Fire

Boise National Forest

Firefighters say they made good progress on the Karney fire last night.  The 300 acre fire is burning in the Robie Creek area between Boise and Idaho City.

Eighty homes in the area are under a voluntary evacuation notice.  Police encouraged Jane Burgman and her husband to leave the area.  They soon loaded their dog and the cat into a camper and left their home of 14 years.  “I’m teetering on the edge.  I’m worried that we’re gonna lose everything that we’ve worked so hard to gain.  We have the most important things, we have the photo albums, we have ourselves, we have our animals, but still…”

One house was destroyed when the fire first broke out Monday.

Fire crews used burnouts to slow the fire down last night.  One hundred thirty people are fighting the fire and more crews and engines have been requested.

The Boise County Board of Commissioners declared a disaster emergency yesterday.  That allows the county to apply for state and federal aid.  The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has already approved a request for help.  That means FEMA will pay 75 percent of the cost of fighting the blaze.
