The National Weather Service in Boise has issued a winter storm warning for the West Central and Boise Mountains through Saturday morning. Meteorologist Colin Baxter says snow levels will be greatest in elevations above 4,000 feet.
The storm is moving in quickly from the Alaskan Gulf. Wind is also an issue with this storm.
“As the front moves across we expect some pretty strong winds, gusts as high as 45 mph," Baxter says. "The winds will back off briefly and then a stronger pressure gradient is going to set up. We’re going to see some quite strong winds across the area.”
Baxter forecasts morning winds in Mountain Home and Twin Falls tomorrow to reach 30-45 mph.
The Treasure Valley could see an inch of snow overnight, before temperatures climb above freezing.
Bogus Basin is already receiving snow, and should get up to a foot this weekend. McCall could get almost eight inches of snow by the end of Saturday, and Twin Falls is predicted to receive about five inches when the storm is done.
The weather service warns travelers driving through Eastern Oregon or Southwestern Idaho this weekend to be especially cautious. Blowing snow could make driving hazardous.
