The National Weather Service office in Boise held a special live weather briefing Wednesday morning for those traveling during Thanksgiving and the upcoming weekend.
NWS expects light snow and rain tonight throughout southwest Idaho and southeast Oregon. This will affect mountain areas in particular, with snow levels around 5,000 feet. On Thursday afternoon, NWS predicts a light break in winter storms with dry weather for a short period of time.
But they say the main event will take place early Friday morning, with moderate to heavy snow in mountains above 4,500 feet. Valley locations will see up to half an inch of rain, which could cause a light amount of snow in the evening or into Saturday morning.
Jay Breidenbach works for NWS in Boise. He says all this precipitation could bring fog to the roads.
“The good news is that on Saturday and Sunday, dry weather returns, but then with all of this precipitation that we’ve had around the area, dense fog could set up on Sunday morning," he says.
As for after Thanksgiving weekend, Elizabeth Padian from NWS expects the wet weather to continue.
"We’re not looking at any prolonged dry period in the extended forecast, so it’ll still be active with periods of rain and snow," she says.
