In 2017, only 20.3% of registered voters cast their ballot in Nampa’s mayoral election. This year, Conservation Voters for Idaho is providing bilingual information about the importance of voting in local elections.
Antonio Hernandez is with the nonprofit, which endorsed both Republican and Democratic candidates last year. He says their “Community and Conversation” event is about reinforcing the direct change a community can make through participating in local elections.
“This is the first year we are having the event," Hernandez says. "We hope though that it’s just the start of a conversation that continues around voting in local elections and civic engagement and how people can feel a little bit more connected to their government rather than some of the apathy and disconnect we’ve been seeing.”
Hernandez also noted the importance of the bilingual event in a place like Nampa with a growing Hispanic community.
The event takes place Saturday, August 24 from 7-8:30 p.m. More information can be found here.
Correction: The original version of this story stated that Conservation Voters for Idaho only endorsed Democratic candidates last year. They endorsed Republicans as well.
