Every December for the past 12 years, the Boise Bicycle Project teams up with local nonprofits to gather applications for the Holiday Kids Bike Giveaway.
Executive director and founder Jimmy Hallyburton told Idaho Matters yesterday that the process makes sure the kids who need a bike the most are the ones who get them.
“We have the kids give us their name, their height, their two favorite colors, and then they draw us a picture and write a story about their dream bike," Hallyburton said.
They planned to give away 500 bikes this year, but ended up receiving more than 700 requests.
Hallyburton is asking the community to donate their gently-used bikes to match with a recipient.
“One of our focuses is to make sure everyone has that experience of getting a bicycle when they are young and having the opportunity to have that bicycle connect them to opportunities to grow and flourish," said Hallyburton.
He’s also asking people to adopt a bike online if they don’t have one to donate and for warm hats, gloves and coats.
The event will take place Saturday, Dec. 21 and donations will be accepted up until the night before. More information can be found here.
