U.S. Senator Mike Crapo was arrested and charged with driving under the influence outside Washington, D.C. early Sunday morning.
Crapo, a Republican from Idaho Falls, issued this statement:
“I am deeply sorry for the actions that resulted in this circumstance. I made a mistake for which I apologize to my family, my Idaho constituents and any others who have put their trust in me. I accept total responsibility and will deal with whatever penalty comes my way in this matter. I will also undertake measures to ensure that this circumstance is never repeated."
Crapo was pulled over for failing to stop at a red light. Police say Crapo failed several field sobriety tests and was arrested at 12:45 a.m. Sunday. He was taken to the Alexandria, Virginia jail and released on an unsecured $1,000 bond at about 5 a.m..
Crapo has a Jan. 4 court date.
Sen. Crapo, a Mormon, was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 1998. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1993-1998. Crapo began his political career in the Idaho Legislature in 1984.
