Police will be able to issue citations and fines to enforce Boise’s COVID-19 rules, including its mask mandate, beginning Monday. This is according to a new public health order Boise Mayor Lauren McClean announced Thursday.
COVID-19 cases continue to skyrocket, with new infections consistently topping 1,000 per day.
McLean instituted a mask order early in the pandemic but has stressed that the city would rely on education. With new cases spiraling upwards and hospitals overwhelmed, McLean now says people will be able to call non-emergency numbers to summon Boise Police officers to enforce the rules.
In a press release, McLean said, “What we are currently doing is not working. If we do not change our approach, our health and our economy will suffer.”
Face coverings and keeping six feet of distance between people are required in public places in Boise. In addition, the new order means only ticketed passengers will be allowed inside Boise Airport and all bicycle bars must cease operations.
Starting on Monday, businesses that need support enforcing their COVID-19 protocols can call Boise Police non-emergency dispatch at (208) 377-6790. To file a complaint against a business, individuals can call the City Clerk at (208) 608-7040.
Starting Monday, several city buildings, including City Hall, the Boise Depot and all libraries will close until January 15. IceWorld and all city pools will be closed through at least September 2021.
