As college tuition continues to climb, students across the country struggle to pay for things like tuition, housing and food.
A student survey at the College of Western Idaho found 40% of its students experience some type of food insecurity. This Friday the Nampa campus is hosting a five-course meal to raise money to support CWI’s campus garden, which gives students access to fresh produce.
Andrea Schumaker is the Department Chair of Physical and Agricultural Sciences and appeared on Idaho Matters to talk about the Farm To Fork dinner.
“It’s painful for me to see students eating like microwave mac and cheese or the top ramen which certainly is substance, it gives them food in their belly, but I want to be able to give them something better," Schumaker says.
Schumaker and a team started the garden in spring of 2018 after watching students struggle to access affordable, nutritious food.
The garden teaches students how to grow and cook produce while also supplementing their meals through harvests twice a week. The $75-tickets will go directly to the garden and will help buy tools and plants and repair an irrigation system.
