Marijuana dispensaries could soon be coming to Ontario, Oregon – right in the Treasure Valley’s backyard. Now, a pot shop might be coming in the orbit of the Magic Valley.
From Twin Falls to Wells, Nevada it’s about a two-hour drive. The small Nevada outpost could soon be an outlet for medical marijuana. The Wells City Council gave its blessing to a letter of support for two businesses looking for approval from the Nevada Marijuana Division. The town has indicated it would allow one dispensary in city limits.
The Elko Daily Free Press reports in addition to the support letter, Wells leaders passed a resolution for a 3 percent tax on growing and dispensing pot in town. The Nevada community is interested in the employment and financial prospects marijuana cultivation and retail could offer.
Wells looked to a study examining the impact of retail pot in similarly sized Parachute, Colorado. That city offers both medicinal and recreational weed. The report estimated the small Colorado town could rake in between $90,000 and $225,000 in sales tax annually.
Before the push in Wells to allow a medical marijuana outlet, West Wendover, on the Utah border, was the only city in Elko County to allow a dispensary.
