Lawsuit Challenges Idaho Law Banning Transgender Women From Sports

Chris Mosier, the first transgender athlete to qualify for an Olympic trial, visited Boise in March 2020 to protest a bill that would ban trans girls and women from competing on sex-segregated sports teams.

A lawsuit was filed Wednesday that challenges Idaho’s recently passed law banning women and girls who are transgender, and many women and girls who are intersex, from participating in sports.

Governor Brad Little signed the law, HB 500, making Idaho the first state to impose an outright ban on participation of transgender female athletes. It's the only statewide law regulating transgender and intersex athletes in the country.

The ACLU filed the lawsuit on behalf of a Idaho college track athlete who is transgender, and a cisgender Boise high school student concerned about being subjected to invasive sex verification testing under the new law. Ritchie Eppink of the ACLU of Idaho joins the show to talk about the lawsuit, along with plaintiff and Boise State athlete Lindsay Hecox.
