The partial government shutdown stretched to five weeks. This Friday is the second payday some federal employees did not receive a check. While a deal has tentatively been reached to reopen the government, it will still be days before those workers are compensated.

The current government shutdown is now the longest one in U.S. history. As a broad spectrum of federal employees continue to be furloughed, personnel at airports are on the job without pay.

More loaded guns were found passing through the TSA checkpoint at the Boise Airport. Two firearms with bullets in them were discovered in carry-ons at the airport this week. Guns in carry-ons has proven to be a recurring problem at the facility.

The number of firearms discovered in carry-on luggage at the Boise airport has continued to rise in recent years. This increase aligns with a national trend.

In 2016, a record number of 18 firearms were found in carry-on luggage at the Boise airport. Nationally, a record number of almost 3,400 were discovered in 2016. Regional TSA spokeswoman Lorie Dankers anticipates this number continuing to grow for 2017.

The Idaho Statesman reports pilots were unable to make contact with air traffic controllers for 20 minutes Saturday morning. FAA officials would not provide any details into the incident other than saying they are investigating.

No incidents were reported as a result of the inability to contact controllers.

You can now fly non-stop from Boise to Dallas. American Airlines opened that service last Thursday. With that, the Boise Airport comes within one flight of its pre-recession high.

Airport director Rebecca Hupp says before the recession hit in 2008 there were 21 non-stop flights in and out of Boise serving nearly three million passengers a year. Hupp says when she came on board in 2012 there were only 15 non-stop flights and passenger numbers were down a couple hundred thousand.

There's been a lot of news lately about long lines at airports. The head of daily operations at the Transportation Security Administration was removed from office earlier this week, as frustrations mount at the country's bigger airports.

The number of flights in and out of the Boise airport increases Friday. Airport officials say Delta will begin flying new routes to and from Seattle as part of the airline’s west coast expansion. But there’s one route that continues to elude Boise travelers – a direct flight to a major east coast hub.

The Idaho National Guard has identified the two soldiers who were killed Thursday near Gowen Field when their Apache helicopter crashed.

Chief Warrant Officer 4 Stien P. Gearheart, 50, and Chief Warrant Officer 4 Jon L. Hartway, 43, were killed when the helicopter they were piloting crashed during night training. Gearheart was from Meridian, Hartway was from Kuna.

The Guard says both men were part of the 1-183rd Attack Reconnaissance Battalion based in Boise.

The federal government has awarded the Boise Airport $700,000 to help secure direct flights to the eastern U.S.

The airport applied for the Department of Transportation grant over the summer.  A similar application last year was not successful.

SkyWest Airlines has chosen Boise for the site of its new $20 million maintenance facility, a project state leaders tout was made possible by a newly-created tax incentive program.

In June, Boise Mayor David Bieter announced SkyWest would open a maintenance facility at the Boise Airport, using an existing hangar at the Jackson Jet Center. He said then that SkyWest was considering expanding that facility in Boise.

The head of the Boise Metro Chamber of Commerce says lining up daily, non-stop flights to a major East Coast hub is now the local business community's top priority.

The airport has again applied for a federal grant that, if successful, would be used to help cover costs for an airline if the route proves to be initially unprofitable. The city applied for a similar grant last year but was unsuccessful.

Boise Mayor David Bieter announced Friday that SkyWest Airlines is opening a maintenance facility at the Boise Airport.

During his annual State of the City speech, Bieter said the facility will use an existing hangar at the Jackson Jet Center. “While we’re not sure yet the total number of jobs, we do know they will be able to service three large planes every night,” Bieter says. “And the wages they will pay will serve a family well.”
