Although Mayor Tammy de Weerd will no longer lead the City of Meridian come January, her policies could largely live on in the winner of the November 5 election. Robert Simison will take the job in January, after serving as de Weerd's longtime chief of staff. Idaho Matters talks with de Weerd, along with Boise State Public Radio reporter Rachel Cohen about Twin Falls and Blaine County elections. Finally, we connect with Valley County Commissioner Sherry Maupin to find out what a failed levy means for the counties deteriorating roads.

Valley County, which encompasses McCall, Donnelly, Cascade and plenty of rural and Forest Service land in Idaho's West Central Mountains, is struggling to maintain its roads. Years of lower budgets coupled with a threat of a sunsetting federal funds has forced county leaders to look at other ways to make up the difference. Their solution? A new tax on homeowners, which is on the November 5 ballot.

Valley County

Update: May 10, 2019 - Valley County commissioners decided to scrap a proposed waterways ordinance that would have bumped the no-wake zone from 300 to 1,000 feet on area lakes. The McCall Star-News reports that commissioners decided not to vote on the proposed ordinance at their regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, instead choosing to start fresh on drafting a waterways ordinance to better regulate motorized boat use in the region.

A group of western politicians, industry leaders and other stakeholders convened at Boise State Tuesday. The Andrus Center for Public Policy hosted the day-long conference, which included remarks from Congressman Mike Simpson, Montana Governor Steve Bullock and a few Idaho county commissioners.

Update on April 27, 2016:  Valley County officials learned Wednesday that they will advance to the top eight in the America’s Best Communities competition. They’ll bring home $100,000 to begin implementing an economic development plan. In 11 months the contest sponsors Frontier Communications, DISH Network and the Weather Channel will assess how well the eight communities are implementing their plans. They’ll then choose three winners who will receive $1 million, $2 million and $3 million.
