If you're looking for a fun weekend outing, just 100 miles north in the small resort town of McCall you will find an iconic Idaho event.
Starting Friday, the town puts on a celebration of all things winter, including the McCall Winter Carnival's famous snow sculptures. McKenzie Kraemer directs the carnival, which kicks off a 10-day run with a number of free, family-friendly events.
"We have 30 sculpture this year. They are built by local businesses, something you just don't see that often," Kraemer says.
Other spectacles include a snow bike race, monster dog pull, ice show and something new this year: The McCall Ultra Challenge Iditarod qualifying sled dog race.
"We've got about 12 mushing teams from around the country coming to compete on a 250-mile course," says Kraemer.
One challenge to the weekend might be finding a place to stay. The carnival director recommends giving property management firms a call to find short-term rentals for condos, homes or open apartments.
