Longtime educator, consultant and Democrat Jana Jones is the first candidate to announce a run for Idaho's Superintendent of Public Instruction.
Jones ran for the office in 2006 and narrowly lost to current Superintendent Tom Luna by just 2.5 percent.
Jones says the public has lost trust in Luna after his battles with teachers groups and others over his Students Come First laws. Voters repealed those laws in 2012.
“I’ve watched where we are and what’s going on and I strongly believe what I believed the first time I ran against Tom," Jones says, "that I can provide the kind of leadership that can be trusted to move public education forward.”
Jones made her announcement via this web video saying, "I've spend the last 40 years in education in the classroom, in school districts at the state level and in both the public and private sectors. And I know what it takes to bring everyone to the table to do what's best for Idaho's kids."
Jones has a bachelor’s degree in Special Education from Utah State University.
Superintendent Tom Luna is currently serving his second term in the state-wide office. The Republican hasn't yet officially announced whether he'll seek a third term.
