If you were hoping to snag a last-minute camping spot for Memorial Day weekend, you’ll have to look beyond Idaho’s many state parks.
“It’s the first weekend of the big camping season," says Tammy Kolsky with Idaho Parks and Recreation. "It begins with Memorial Day and it ends with Labor Day. It’s just not uncommon ever for us to be booked for Memorial Day.”
This year is no different. By Wednesday, all 2,000 campsites at the 30 state parks were booked for the weekend. Kolsky says many were reserved far ahead of time.
“Many of our campers start booking nine months in advance of when they want to come.”
But she says that just because you don’t have a state park campsite reservation, doesn’t mean you can’t find a place to set up your tent. Many National Forest Service campgrounds don’t require a reservation, and Kolsky points out there are private campsites in the Gem State as well.
But she says the bottom line is: If you want a state park spot for Memorial Day, start planning for next year.
