Broncos Play This Weekend For A Fourth Mountain West Championship

This game will cap their best season since joining the Mountain West Conference in 2011. The 11-1 Broncos are looking to win their fourth Mountain West Championship title this Saturday.

Dave Southorn, who covers Boise State for The Athletic, told Idaho Matters his predictions.

“I think they’ll win. I think they’re in a good spot, they’re at home," said Southorn.

But a win against Hawaii might not clinch a New Year’s Six bowl for the Broncos. Saturday’s Memphis versus Cincinnati game will determine that. Cincinnati is only one spot below Boise State in the rankings which means, if they beat Memphis they could jump the Broncos in line.

“Boise State will be playing simultaneously with that Memphis v. Cincinnati game, so there’s no scoreboard watching," Southorn said. "They know they have to win no matter what."

Southorn says college football conferences have become increasingly divided. This makes it harder for smaller schools like Boise State to play big schools in bowl games — despite good rankings.

Kickoff on Saturday is at 2 p.m., with rain in the forecast. You can also catch the championship on ESPN.
