Garden City Artists Growing In Number As PopUp Show Begins

Garden City hasn’t always been known for its artistic residents. But over the last 10 years, a growing number of creative types have set up shop there.

Surel’s Place is the focal point of the city's Live-Work-Create District. The multipurpose space, which hosts an artist in residency program, is named after Surel Mitchell. The painter lived in the house until her death in 2011.

Today, her legacy lives on in the more than 20 people who make their art in the five-block radius of Surel’s Place. Jodi Eichelberger moved from New York City to Garden City two years ago, and put together the first show with artists who call the Live-Work-Create District home.

“These artists can show together, but also meet together, talk together," says Eichelberger. "And there are collaborations developing as well, as a result of these kinds of activities.”

Eichelberger says that unlike a traditional art show, people who buy the pieces will walk out with them in hand. He says they’ve asked artists to provide backup art work, so as one piece is purchased another one will replace it. Genres including jewelry, sculpture and visual art will be represented.

The PopUp shop reception begins at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Surel’s Place, and will be open through November 26. For more information, click here
