Bruneau Fossil Reef: Geologic Field Trip

Bruneau Fossil Reef: Geologic Field Trip

Let’s get our hands dirty!!

Explore the geology of Bruneau Fossil Algal Reef and Horse Hill near Bruneau in Owyhee County with geologist guide Barb Beatty. Learn how to find fossils, petrified wood, and Moqui balls at the two featured 1
stops.

1. The Horse Hill Site, which includes a large unconformity surface between the Miocene and Pliocene. This will also be our lunch stop. Hiking distance is ~1/3 Mile with the option to extend to ~1 Mile. A short 5-minute geologic presentation will be made on-site.

2. Fossil Algal Reef site, which includes a ~1/2 mile hike along a fossil reef full of algal "Vases", snail fossils, and other types of interesting geologic features and fossils. A short 5-minute geologic presentation will be made on-site.

MEET LOCATION: Let’s meet in the Albertson’s Shopping Center parking lot near McDonald’s Restaurant, 6574 S Federal Way at 9:45 am for a 10 am departure. Guide Barb will facilitate carpools to travel ~70 miles, primarily on paved roads. We will need some people with higher-clearance vehicles to serve as carpool drivers so the last ~5 miles can be accessed. She will have driving directions, GPS locations, and a map ready to give to volunteer carpool drivers.

We will stop at the "One Stop" store and gas station in Bruneau to regroup and have access to restrooms or to buy snacks.

Even with the two featured stops, there is not much hiking involved ~1 mile the entire day. Suitable for almost all ages and abilities. Dress for the weather, including proper shoes or boots for some uneven ground.

Limited to 24 people and few cars because of rough road and parking. Everyone must pre-register.

Bring a rock hammer if you can.

Bring lunch and beverage. No restrooms but that has never stopped us. Return to Boise Federal Way location about 4 pm or so. No dogs, please.

This event will be cancelled if there is measurable snow, rain or high winds.
No charge if the IMMG cancels the event. Please check your email the day before. Be sure you register with a functioning email.
