In the early years of the French colony along the St. Lawrence River, there were many more men than women. The "King's Daughters" were approximately 768 women of child-bearing age sent from France under the sponsorship of King Louis XIV with the promise of a dowry of 50 livre or more for a marriage to an unmarried male colonist.
