Some workers at Micron’s Boise headquarters will be getting pink slips as the semiconductor giant shifts manufacturing duties to Taiwan.
Micron wouldn’t confirm how many employees they’ll lay off over the next 18 months, but the Idaho Statesman reports the number will be in the low hundreds.
Spokesman Marc Musgrove says they will try to find other jobs within the company for these workers or help them secure positions somewhere else.
With the offshoring of Boise’s manufacturing jobs, Micron’s footprint in the Idaho capital will focus instead on research and development. The company just opened a new facility that will double its current R&D space when fully equipped.
The news comes amidst soaring profits reported this week in annual disclosure forms.
It was a record year for Micron – the company earned about $2.5 billion more in the fourth quarter of 2017 than it did this time last year.
It also raked in nearly $5.1 billion overall during 2017.
