Radioactive waste the U.S. Air Force couldn't get permission to bury at a California dump site has found a new home in southwestern Idaho.
The material from the McClellan Air Force Base in Sacramento County, Calif., has been buried instead at the U.S. Ecology hazardous waste site east of Boise.
The Spokesman-Review reports the waste is radium dust left over from glow-in-the-dark aircraft instruments. Air Force officials told California regulators the dust was naturally occurring, but officials rejected efforts to bury the waste in that state.
After learning the material was dumped at the U.S. Ecology site, Idaho regulators inspected the site and determined radium concentrations fell below threshold levels for Idaho regulations.
