The National Weather Service considers the snow season running from October to May; so far this year, Boise has seen 37.6 inches – significant, but not close to an all-time record.
The winter that saw the most snow ever in the Treasure Valley was a century ago. The 1916-1917 season saw a total of 50 inches fall. The Idaho Press Tribune reports this winter is currently the 12th snowiest since the record set a hundred years ago.
Another record we’ve come closer to breaking is for snowfall in a 130-day period. This season’s 37 inches puts us in second place – the record is 42 inches.
Despite the once-in-a-generation severity of this winter, forecasters think it’s unlikely the Treasure Valley will shatter the all-time record. Even though we’re well above the average 2.5 inches that typically falls in February, we’d need over a foot more of snow to close in on the record.
March sees an average of just over an inch of snowfall.
