Idaho's 2018 wheat crop is looking good -- so far.

Wheat farmers in the Treasure Valley have begun harvesting their crops, and so far – so good.

“Well we’re excited about this year’s crop," says Blaine Jacobson with the Idaho Wheat Commission. "It’s looking good at this point; we’re just keeping our fingers crossed that we don’t have hail damage or some late season storms that cause sprout damage.”

The weather has been not too hot, and not too cold – and moisture has come in the right quantities and at the right time. Jacobson has been executive director of the Idaho Wheat Commission for 16 years. Jacobsen says so far, Chinese tariffs on American goods imposed this summer have not affected Idaho’s market.

“As these trade wars intensify, if there’s not a rollback from where we are over the long-term, it has the potential to impact our export sales.”

In terms of revenue, the state department of agriculture says wheat has consistently come in second behind potatoes in the Gem State.
