Today is the final day to submit comments for an environmental review on a controversial proposed mining project in Valley County.
The Stibnite Mine projectbacked by Canadian company Midas Gold would revive an open pit mine about 40 miles east of McCall.
The company says it would clean up legacy pollution in the area through private investment, restoring critical habitat for fish that spawn in the Idaho mountains.
But such a cleanup and the promise of hundreds of jobs over the life of the mine hasn’t dissuaded opponents who say there are outstanding questions about the project and whether pollution will persist.
The Idaho Conservation League has been rallying supporters to comment against the proposal as the U.S. Forest Service considers permitting Midas Gold to forge ahead.
And the Nez Perce Tribe sued Midas last year in federal court, claiming the company was illegally discharging heavy metals into a tributary of the Salmon River. That case is still ongoing.
