Listen: Idaho City Entrepreneur On Losing Five Local Businesses To Fire

Darin Oswald

Residents in Idaho City woke up to a fire damaged town Friday morning.

Historic Idaho City is dealing with the loss of five businesses just as its lucrative summer tourism season was getting underway. Officials say a fire started in Calamity Jane’s restaurant on Main Street sometime before 3 a.m. Friday. By the time firefighters extinguished the flames, most of a city block was ruined along with four other businesses.

To find out how Idaho City is doing, our Scott Graf spoke with Trudy Jackson. She owns “Trudy’s Kitchen” – an Idaho City restaurant that did not get burned. But the situation is familiar to Jackson, who had to rebuild her business after a fire seven years ago.

Jackson says Friday's fire burned in buildings that were built in the 1970s and 1980s, and destroyed some iconic, local institutions.
