Idaho Postal Carriers Stamp Out Hunger

Idaho postal workers will be carrying more than mail Saturday as they collect items for the 27th Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive.

Over the last week, letter carriers brought not just mail, but plastic grocery bags to homes and mailboxes. All across the Gem State, people will put non-perishable food items in those bags and leave them out Saturday at the mailbox for pickup.

Last year, almost 300,000 pounds of food was donated in Idaho. More than 71 million pounds was donated nationwide.

USPS says Thanksgiving and Christmas are when food banks get the majority of their donations, leaving bare shelves in spring and summer. This drive is designed to help meet that need.

All non-perishable foods are welcome but foods high in protein, like tuna, salmon, beans and peanut butter, are most needed. Canned fruits, vegetables, mac and cheese and fruit juice are also high on the list.
