Boise State University, like most college campuses, has programs to keep students, faculty and staff safe. Boise State partners with the app Rave Guardian, which connects users to help when they need it.
Robert Littrell is the Director of Emergency Planning at Boise State, which oversees the app.
“We have 70+ blue light emergency phones on campus, that will dial either our communication center or 911,” Littrell said. “Rave Guardian is like having one of those emergency phones as an application on your phone.”
And there are other features, too. You can set a safety timer so security is called if you don't check in after a set amount of time, or you can submit an anonymous security tip.
The problem is that very few people even have the app on their phone, let alone are using it. Right now, Boise State Rave Guardian has only around 400 downloads. That’s even lower than it was last year. Littrell wants to see that change.
“I’d like to see all of our students and faculty and staff download the app, put it on their mobile device,” Littrell said.
Because, he said, the app can’t help you if you don't have it.
