Boise Police K-9 Jardo, who was injured in a firefight last week on the Boise Bench, has died.
Boise Police Chief Bill Bones said Jardo died due to complications from the wounds he received during the manhunt. Two police officers, Corporal Chris Davis and Corporal Kevin Holtry were both injured, along with Jardo. Davis is recovering at home and Holtry remains at St. Alphonsus. Parolee Marco Romero was killed.
Jardo underwent surgery after the Friday shooting and veterinarians removed one of his lungs. He was up and about the past few days, attending a new conference and a vigil for one of the injured officers.
But Bones said the dog was rushed to the vet last night. A veterinarian said Jardo suffered a cardiac arrest during emergency surgery. Bones said he could not release details yet on what the dog did during the manhunt for Romero, but said the K-9 was a hero.
Jardo was a Belgian Malinois and came to the Boise Police Department from Europe in 2013. He was trained to track and apprehend criminals.
A memorial is being planned for next week.
