Philip Selway On World Cafe

For the past 20 years, drummer Philip Selway has been the driving force behind Radiohead. But until earlier this year, few realized his ability to play guitar, sing and write songs of his own.

The quiet and reserved Selway began to pen his own material after the death of his mother in 2006. He explores themes like family, mortality and growing old on his debut solo album, Familial, which was released on Nonesuch in August. The album is packed with impressive guest appearances, including Lisa Germano, Soul Coughing bassist Sebastian Steinberg, and Wilco members Glenn Kotche and Pat Sonsone.
