On Veterans Day, A Visit To Idaho's Most Unique American Legion Post (It's Behind Bars)

George Prentice

There are nearly 100 American Legion posts in Idaho. And on Veterans Day - from Aberdeen to Wendell - Idaho veterans are gathering to honor one another's service. But most Idahoans are unaware that one of the most engaged American Legion posts is behind the walls of the Idaho State Correctional Center, the huge men's prison south of Boise.

Morning Edition host George Prentice paid a visit to the postto talk to inmates about their service to their country and their unique sense of identity.

"We can be part of something bigger, which is redeeming. It rekindles our former service and our former selves."

As host of Morning Edition, I'm the luckiest person I've ever known because I spend my days listening to smart, passionate, engaging people. It’s a public trust. I lean in to talk with actors, poets, writers and volunteers who make Idaho that much more special.
