Idaho Primary Features Some Key Legislative Races, But Turnout Could Be Low

Tuesday is primary day for a number of legislative races in Idaho. There are someimportant face-offs to watch – ones that could influence the direction of Idaho’s conservative majority. Some incumbent Republicans are being challenged by more conservative politicians, creating division among the GOP.

The one big statewide race is for the supreme court. Four candidates are vying for this position, which is nonpartisan.

But besides that, voters may not recognize many of the names or issues on the ballot. According to Boise State emeritus professor of political science Jim Weatherby, a lot of people who usually vote may sit this one out.

“This is a unique year in which we’re having two primary elections and I think some people are confused about that," says Weatherby. "They’ve already voted as far as they’re concerned. Some of these races – individuals are having trouble generating a lot of interest.”

Weatherby says that people could be confused about the difference between the March GOP presidential primary – which former presidential candidate Ted Cruz won – and this week’s lower-profile legislative primary. He says smaller turnout numbers could produce some surprising results.

Polls are open from 8:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. To find where to vote, click here.
