The Mormon Church released a statement Friday in support of “Dreamer” immigrants who were brought to the U.S. illegally as children.
Leaders from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints say politicians should “create policies that provide hope and opportunities” for these young people. They said these folks have “demonstrated a capacity to serve and contribute positively in our society” and that they should continue to be given that chance.
But the statement also reiterates that the church does not advocate specific legislation.
In September, President Donald Trump announced the end of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which offered legal status to these folks in a move to spur talks on comprehensive immigration reform. This week Trump indicated that he favors a pathway to citizenship for DACA recipients.
The program is set to expire March 5, which could trigger the deportation of about 800,000 people, unless politicians in Washington can reach a deal.
