Idahoans with expiring driver’s licenses will have until the end of October to renew them.
Idaho Department of Transportation officials made the move after severe software issues crippled the ability of local driver’s license offices to process these everyday transactions.
This extension doesn’t apply to commercial driver’s licenses who don’t have a legal presence document on file with Idaho’s DMV or those whose driving privileges are currently revoked.
Most DMV county offices have closed in response to these problems, according to ITD. They say they’re working on a solution that will allow these locations to re-open on Thursday.
Wait times at these locations, run by county sheriffs, have lasted several hours at times as these blackouts have persisted over the past several months.
County sheriffs have blamed a software upgrade that took place about two weeks ago for the most recent set of delays, demanding that control over issuing driver’s licenses be taken over by the state.
Gov. Butch Otter responded that he would put together a working group made up of ITD officials, county sheriffs, Idaho State Police and the Idaho Association of Counties to resolve these issues.
