The United Nations wants to dissolve the U.S.-appointed Iraqi Governing Council in favor of a transitional government chosen by the U.N. Hear NPR's Scott Simon, Iraqi-American lawyer Faisal Istrabadi -- who helped draft Iraq's interim constitution -- and Hamid Dabashi, chairman of Columbia University's Department of Middle East and Asian Languages and Cultures.

U.N. Straw Poll
NPR's Ann Cooper reports on the struggle at the United Nations over the selection of a new Secretary General. The United States has blocked the re-election of current Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali, but so far the five permanent members of the U-N Security Council have been unable to agree on a candidate to replace him. There are four candidates from Africa right now, but the US, France and Britain are reportedly using their veto power as permanent Council members to block one or more of the candidates.

A half century ago, a beekeeper from New Zealand and a Sherpa from Nepal reached the top of Everest, the tallest mountain in the world. To mark next month's anniversary of the epic ascent, Peter Hillary and Jamling Norgay return to Everest to retrace their fathers' legendary footsteps.
