The Boise State men’s basketball team is headed back to the NCAA tournament. The Broncos will play Wednesday night in Dayton, Ohio against the host Dayton Flyers.
The game is one of two in the tournament’s first round, and known traditionally as a “play-in game”. The 11-seed Broncos were forced to play the extra game as one of the last four teams to make the field, following Friday night’s loss to Wyoming in the Mountain West Conference tournament in Las Vegas. Wyoming went on to win the tournament and is one of three Mountain West teams in this year’s NCAA field of 68 teams. San Diego State is the other.
Boise State was in a similar position two years ago and lost to LaSalle in an opening round game in Dayton. LaSalle went on to advance to the Sweet 16. The winner of Wednesday’s game will take on Providence, a 6 seed in a game played Friday in Columbus, Ohio.
It’s the second time in school history – and first time since 1994 – that both the Boise State men’s and women’s teams will make the NCAA tournaments in the same season. The Bronco women locked up a bid last week by winning their conference tournament. They’ll learn their matchup when pairings are announced late Monday afternoon.
