The unofficial start of summer is practically here. Thousands will hit the road Memorial Day weekend. Ahead of the holiday, AAA Idaho is suggesting travelers start packing two days before leaving.
With the car packed and snacks at the ready, Matthew Conde says motorists getting out of town will have some company.
“We’re looking at 220,000 Idahoans hitting the road this weekend,” says Conde, a spokesman for AAA Idaho.
According to Conde, 41.5 million people are planning some kind of getaway this weekend. The big uptick in travel parallels high consumer confidence, low unemployment and more disposable income.
Going into Memorial Day, Conde says gas prices are the highest they’ve been since 2014. Consumers seem undeterred.
“Gasoline is just the lifeblood of the great American road trip,” Conde says. “Right now, we’re looking at fairly high prices compared to recent years, but not quite to that pain point where people won’t travel at all.”
As the miles tick by on that great American road trip, Conde warns drivers should know their limits. His message to those in the car is a common refrain: If you see something, say something.
“As the copilot, get involved,” urges Conde. “If you see something that you don’t like – the driver starts acting a little funny – take the wheel.”
AAA estimates it’ll be rescuing some 324,000 drivers over the weekend.
