Happy free-comic-book eve. That’s not a thing, but Free Comic Book Day is, and it’s on Saturday. This annual event could also be called nerd-recruitment day. It’s the industry’s way of luring people into comic-book shops who may not otherwise venture into the realms of the nerd lords.
This year, 50 titles are available for free from publishers large and small, though not all titles will be offered at all locations. If you want a free comic in Idaho here are the places to go.
Captain Comics - This is arguably the free comics flagship in the Boise area. The staff goes all out, people dress in costumes there’s also usually a pretty long line. This year they’ll also have comic artist Jacob Bear on hand to sign his book Jurassic Strike Force 5, one of this year’s free offerings.
Krypton Comics - In Nampa, Krypton Comics is making a big deal out of the day with door prizes and a raffle. Artist Jacob Bear will also come by in the afternoon to sign books.
Phoenix Fire Games - In Meridian, this game store will have some free comic titles.
Captain Bengal's Comic Cove - Pocatello’s place for comics, including free comics Saturday.
Outland Comics - Idaho Falls has a bunch of nuclear scientists who work at the INL. You can bet some of them are lifelong comic lovers.
Safari Pearl – The place in Moscow where U of I students go to get reading material that’s not on most of their class lists.
Talk Nerdy To Me – This Lewiston store is participating in Free Comic Book day, and would win our best comic-book store name contest if we had one.
Hastings - Ten stores in Idaho will have free comics, including in Twin Falls and Coeur d’Alene.
Frank N Fred’s Comics & Cards – OK, this one is not in Idaho it’s in Elko, Nev. But it may be the closest spot for free comics for a few of our desert-dwelling public radio listeners.
