Dr. Katie Devine will discuss some of the results coming out of citizen-science, or people-enabled, research examining the plane of our Milky Way galaxy. In 2015, citizen scientists originally discovered -- and named!-- objects known as "yellowballs" in the Milky Way Project, a citizen science program hosted on zooniverse.org. Yellowballs were found to be sites of massive and intermediate mass star formation and follow-up studies have focused on determining the physical properties of these objects. The PERYSCOPE (People Enabling Research: a Yellowball Survey of the Colors Of Protostellar Environments) Project is an extension of this work, allowing students in introductory astronomy classrooms to measure the light from yellowballs and contribute results to our science program.

Join Boise State Physics on Friday, August 5th at 7:30pm in the Education/Science Building, room 112 to hear Dr. Katie Devine of College of Idaho present an overview of the PERYSCOPE Project, and what it means for the scientific community. The event is free and open to the public.
For those that cannot attend in person, the lecture will be live-streamed on Youtube at boi.st/AstroBroncosLive. Those attending the live-stream are welcome and encouraged to ask questions via chat.

After the lecture we will stargaze in Boise State's observatory, weather permitting. An indoor planetarium may be set up in case stargazing is not an option.
