SPIN JAMS: FLOW ARTS GATHERING (PROPS PROVIDED!)

INSTRUCTOR: Krissy Humphreys

Krissy is hosting FREE Flow Arts classes to produce a comprehensive research paper exploring how flow arts can serve as a medium for community building. The paper will focus on the how the role of accessible spin jams can foster social connections, creativity, and a shared sense of purpose through movement and artistic expression.

The mission is to create and foster community through open practices and classes in flow arts. This includes hula hooping, poi dance and other props with dancing.

Flow arts is a dynamic practice that blends elements of dance, skill-based object manipulation, and creative expression. It often incorporates props such as poi, hula hoops, staffs, fans, and juggling equipment, which are used in rhythmic, fluid movements to create visual artistry or tell a story.

What are Spin Jams?
Spin jams are social gatherings for flow artists and anyone curious about flow arts. They offer an inclusive, welcoming space where people of all skill levels can explore prop-based manipulation. These gatherings are the heart of the community—where we come together to share ideas, connect and become part of a community.

Participants will learn:

Basic moves for poi, hoops, fans, flow wand, and other props
Introduction to timing, direction and planes (Fundamentals for learning flow arts)
How to share ideas, moves and connect with others through flow arts.
Overcoming the fear of "messing up"
How to move and dance with different props
The joy of inclusivity and connection
Spatial and body awareness

Classes are for any age and props are provided!

Instructor Bio:

I discovered my passion for flow arts in 2006 in the Bay Area. Since then, I’ve immersed myself in the art —teaching, performing in hundreds of shows, participating in master classes in Paris, and organizing community gatherings and events.

Experience:

I am a co-founder of the Vulcan Crew and the co-writer/editor of two instructional DVDs—Partner Poi and Poi Technique—produced by Vulcan DVDs.

My roles as Director of Operations for FireDrums and Shin of Vulcan Conclave have shaped my leadership journey, offering rich experiences in fostering community and event production.

I am currently a Regional Contact for Burning Man Project, and I am using my experience to foster meaningful connections and create inclusive spaces for artistic expression- through the transformative power of movement and prop-based flow arts.

Her Passions are: Spinning, cultivating community, yoga, spending time with her daughters, and hiking.

PLUS don't miss Krissy's Hula Hoop Making Workshops on 10/23, 12/4, & 2/12/2026.
