Ourself Behind Ourself, Concealed
Ourself Behind Ourself, Concealed
Grammy-nominated cellist Dave Eggar returns to Boise presenting a new collaboration with acclaimed clarinetist Tasha Warren. The new chamber works are by six of today's most dynamic and influential composers: Nathalie Joachim, Paquito D'Rivera, Meg Okura (who will also be performing in her piece), Martha Redbone, Pascal Le Boeuf, and Cornelius Boots. These pieces came into the world during the pandemic lockdown in 2020/2021, each emerging as a reflection of our complex global landscape. From the Far East to the Haitian Caribbean, to the plains of Africa journeying through Cuba to New York, tales whisper and weave to form a beautiful and poignant collision of genres. These stunning new works come to life on the contemporary classical music stage by way of the shape-shifting, chameleon-like natures of these two complementary instruments. The result is an explosion of beauty, power, joy, ecstasy, isolation, and unity; uniquely inspired by personal narrative, identity, and the time in which they were written. “Ourself Behind Ourself, Concealed” will circle back on itself for a deepening experience of the music with the premiere of dance treatments by LED and the Idaho Fine Arts Academy, plus a special performance by tap dancer Andrew Nemr. The performances will be given a new context with an opening performance by Tiokasin Ghosthorse, a master of the ancient red cedar Lakota flute. The evening will evolve into a revealing of the creative process from the composers and musicians. This performance is part of the 10-year anniversary of Surel’s Place as an artist residency program with the return of Dave Eggar as the inaugural legacy resident.
