Two companies are exploring the feasibility of building a food processing facility in Nampa. The proposed location is near the Ford Idaho Center and owned by the city. While the project could trigger large investment in the community, some worry it could impact numerous horse shows scheduled at the events center.
Development of the 16 acres east of the Ford Idaho Center could bring as much as $85 million-worth of investment to Nampa. The city's economic development director, Beth Ineck, tells the Statesman an industrial facility handling food would directly generate around 40 jobs and spur additional hiring throughout the community.
Ten of the 16 acres where the proposed food processing plant would go are currently used for horse events at the Ford Idaho Center. Ineck says maintaining the successful track record of equestrian events at the center is crucial; 26 different shows regularly book the facility each year. Talk of development on the city-owned property has already prompted one show to question booking the venue. It’s thought some shows might relocate to Oregon or Oklahoma should the property be developed.
After hearing two pitches last year from companies about selling the land, the city said it was open to the possibility. Both companies noted the proximity of the property to the freeway, railways and utility hookups.
