The Boise Farmers Market starts its season Saturday. The market, now in its sixth year, is making its debut at a new location.
The opening of the Boise Farmers Market is usually an event. Last year’s season opener drew some 5,000 people to stroll through the collection of vendors selling a range of produce, protein and goods.
Those familiar with the Boise Farmers Market know it’s the one that sets up shop in a parking lot on the west side of downtown. This season, it’s moving and growing.
“Our old location was fabulous; we’ve just outgrown it,” Tamara Cameron says. “At the height of the season last year, we had 80 vendors. It felt really crowded and packed in. There wasn’t enough parking for our shoppers.”
Cameron is the interim market manager. She says the new location, which is along Americana Boulevard where it splits off to 15th Street in west Boise, solves both problems. There’s more space and plenty of free parking.
The new Boise Farmers Market location is in a recently-created urban renewal district by the City of Boise.
“There’s 16 acres there, so it’s going to be a new neighborhood,” Cameron says. “I know that we’re the first thing as part of the development district. [It’s] very exciting for us.”
Along with fresh food items, the market plans on offering cooking classes for adults at the new location. For opening day, Cameron says the market will offer free coffee and be holding giveaways.
