Meridian’s Chief Joseph Elementary School is on lockdown. Police are involved in a standoff with an armed suspect at a home near the school. Meridian district spokesman Eric Exline says school officials have implemented a procedure known as 'Safety Hold'. He says the exterior doors are locked and all outside activities have been canceled.
The school has also canceled afternoon kindergarten classes and is keeping morning kindergartners at the school until the situation changes. Otherwise, Exline says, classes and other activities are proceeding as usual inside.
Chief Joseph is a K-5 school with a focus on arts education. It has 560 students.
