Boise State University Celebrates Graduation Online

President Marlene Tromp addresses graduates in empty arena.

Communications major Lola Perez was one of nearly 2,800 seniors who graduated this Saturday virtually. She capped off her senior year in Boise with champagne and local pastries, while family cheered her on from Kauai, Hawaii.

Lola Perez and Ben Ducey watched the ceremony online and celebrated at home.

Others celebrated with relatives close by. Emily Pape, who earned a degree in Global Studies and Economics, is now a third-generation Boise State grad. She was able to watch with her grandfather and mom, now fellow Bronco alumni.

She said though this commencement was different, it felt special surrounded by loved ones.

“So even though we couldn't be in the arena, it was nice to share today with people I care about and people who care about me," said Pape.

The 90-minute virtual ceremony featured cheers from President Marlene Tromp and faculty, student shout-out videos, and scrolling pages of graduates' names. And of course, no commencement would feel complete without the fight song.

Graduating online might seem unremarkable, but a celebration so unusual might prove to be unforgettable.
