New Evacuations Ordered In Lemhi County

The Lemhi County Sheriff’s Office Sunday ordered the evacuation of residents in the Highway 93 corridor near Salmon.  The evacuation order comes as the Mustang Complex fire burns close to the highway.

The Sheriff’s Department said early Sunday the fire was less than two miles from the road.  Residents between Quartz Creek and North Fork have been told to leave immediately to avoid getting caught in smoke, fire or road congestion.

The evacuations were announced ahead of a Red Flag Warning for the region.  The National Weather Service predicted wind gusts of 25 MPH on Sunday afternoon and evening.  Conditions are expected to be favorable for rapid fire growth again Monday.

Those leaving the area are asked to stop at the Red Cross shelter set up at the Salmon Valley Baptist Church so authorities can account for all residents.  For people who need to stay, meals, cots and showers will be provided free of charge.

Highway 93 remains open.

The Mustang Complex fire has burned 261,000 acres since it started on July 30.  It’s 16 percent contained.
