What Happens To All The Poop From The Animals At Zoo Boise?

Zoo Boise

When you search "zoo poo" on the internet, one of the first things that comes up is a link to the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle. You quickly learn that the facility sells composted animal waste to people in the Pacific Northwest, and at least one person says it makes amazing garden fertilzer.

Wait, why am I Googling "zoo poo" at my job as a reporter for Boise State Public Radio? I'm a serious journalist! Oh right, that's because Wanna Know Idaho listener Colby Spath asked this question:

"I ride my bike past Zoo Boise often and I always wonder: where does all the poop from the animals go?" - listener Colby Spath

Zoo Boise General Curator Harry Peachey (left) and question asker Colby Spath look into the sloth exhibit. Sloths digestive systems are very slow, so they didn't "go" when we were there. (We're OK with that.)

Turns out, at least 147 people are also curious to learn about animal waste disposal. I know this because 147 of you voted for Colby's question in our January voting round. And since Wanna Know Idaho is all about democracy in journalism, I met up with Colby at Zoo Boise to learn more.

(There's a part of me that thinks Colby just wanted to say "poop" on public radio. But, the people have spoken.)

Listen to the podcast episode below to learn what happens after Zoo Boise animals hear the call of nature. Yes, there are numerous scatological puns and even a joke your third grader will appreciate.

Now, I’m looking for the next question to investigate. What have you always wanted to know about our community? Submit your question below. You could be featured on the next episode of Wanna Know Idaho.
